Pupil welfare, duty of care & ESG

Every morning Tonbridge School’s minibuses are on the road, collecting pupils across Kent and the surrounding counties to bring them onto a campus that has stood since 1553. The same vehicles run throughout the day, carrying pupils to sport, activities, and trips. For a school whose mission is putting the welfare of the child at the centre of operations, what happens on those journeys matters as much as anything that happens in the classroom.

One of Britain’s oldest independent schools, Tonbridge chose UK-developed safety technology to strengthen that duty of care to every pupil, and is now extending it further.

‘Only Connect’: a school built on care

Founded under a royal charter granted by Edward VI, Tonbridge School is one of the country’s leading independent schools and a member of the Eton Group. Around 800 boys aged 13 to 18 learn on its campus on the edge of Tonbridge.

The school sums up its ethos in two words: “Only Connect.” Its approach to safeguarding is just as clear: the welfare of the child comes first. That principle does not stop at the school gates. It travels with every pupil onto the minibuses that are, for many boys, the first and last part of their school day.

The challenge

Like any organisation running a daily fleet, Tonbridge faced the practical realities of vehicles in constant use. The trigger was simple: security for those inside the minibuses, and a need to understand what was happening in and around the vehicles.

The transport team needed dependable video evidence of damage to the vehicles and of entire journeys, so that incidents could be understood and addressed properly rather than left to guesswork. With younger pupils travelling together, a clear and reliable record is the foundation of the children’s safety.

Why VisionTrack?

Tonbridge did not have to look far. The school was already a VisionTrack customer and happy with the service. When the time came to strengthen the setup, the decision was led by the school’s Transport Co-Ordinator and Facilities Manager, and the criteria were simple: reliable equipment, responsive customer service and sensible cost.

There is a local thread to the story, too. VisionTrack’s research, development and technical support are based just a few miles away in Tunbridge Wells, a near neighbour to the school. For a customer who values dependable kit and a team that picks up the phone, an established relationship with a British company on the doorstep counted for a great deal.

We’ve been a VisionTrack customer for some time and the service has always been reliable. Extending the system with in-cabin cameras and live tracking was a natural next step in our duty of care.

The solution

Tonbridge’s minibuses were first fitted with VisionTrack forward and rear cameras, capturing the road, supporting safer reversing and protecting the students and staff in case of incidents. That system has done its job dependably.

Now the school is upgrading to VisionTrack’s AI dashcams and adding capabilities that speak directly to pupil safety:

In-cabin cameras
A protective interior view that helps look after pupils and supports the staff who often travel alone with them, giving a fair, factual record that protects everyone on board.
Live vehicle tracking
The real-time location of every minibus, so the school always knows where each vehicle is, can answer a parent’s call, and can pinpoint it instantly should anything happen on a journey.
Driver behaviour & speed insight
A clear view of how the minibuses are driven, including speed, so the school can support good driving and act early on anything that isn’t.

Together, these make the fleet a connected, accountable part of the school’s duty of care rather than a blind spot in it. Mindful that this involves data relating to children, the school is approaching it carefully: access to any footage is limited and controlled, and used only when there is a clear reason to look.

More than a fleet upgrade: a welfare and ESG commitment

For Tonbridge, this is a safeguarding decision as much as a fleet one. Knowing where any vehicle is at any moment, and that pupils are looked after on board, is reassurance the school can offer to parents and to itself: every pupil is accounted for, on every journey.

It is also a visible expression of the school’s wider responsibilities. As schools are increasingly asked to show their commitment to governance and to the welfare of those in their care, Tonbridge’s investment is a clear, practical statement of values: technology adopted to protect children and to operate responsibly.

Knowing exactly where every minibus is, and being able to see what’s happening on board, gives us real peace of mind. For us it comes back to one thing: the welfare of the boys in our care.

The technology behind all of this is developed and supported in Britain. For a school handling data relating to children, that British base and data-protection record matter. Few providers in this market can say their platform is developed and supported in the UK; VisionTrack can, and for Tonbridge that mattered.

Looking ahead

Tonbridge sees the in-cabin cameras and tracking as a first step. With the new system in place across the minibus fleet, the school expects the approach to prove its value over time, and would recommend VisionTrack to others weighing how best to look after the people in their care.

If a school leading the way since 1553 is protecting its pupils with modern, UK-built technology, others have good reason to follow.
